Con Hannigan, wrote a lot about his childhood in Ballinure. This is probably one of his most evocative articles about glorious summer days in old Ballinure listening to the hurling matches on the radio and surrounded by real live hurling stars, (” the mighty men of Ballinure”) such as Mick Cashman, Johnny Quirke, Marie O’Connell, Derry Hayes, Johnny Hayes and the Furlongs, all of whom lived alongside him in Ballinure Cottages.
He speaks fondly of the excitement of “bonna night”, the ships sailing up and down Loughmahon, as well as swimming at the Yanks. The world he describes is now history but the memories of a different era and the original community who live here, before us endures.
