A trip back in time to Mahon in 1982.

The beginnings of the development of the present Mahon community are looked at in this RTE documentary by Pat Butler.  The RTE programme was originally screened on 24th March 1982, all of 38 years ago.

The documentary is mainly based on construction work in the Ferney area in Ringmahon.  The documentary, includes rare footage of the Orchard, Ferney Grove, Ferney Road, Ferney Close , Limes Avenue, Castle Close, Eden Grove, and includes interviews with some local residents, and the City Manager of Cork, T.J. McHugh.

Pat Butler also plays a shot of golf at the Mahon Golf Course, and the programme displays the wide open spaces, that became the homes, the schools, facilities, the parks and the pitches of the new Mahon Community.

Pat,also shows views of the area, which will later become Avenue De Rennes, in this documentary.

Towards the very end of the documentary, there is an fascinating drive along Ferney Road which was a construction site at that time.

The road and local development was opened on 19th October 1982, by the, then, Lord Mayor of Cork, Hugh Coveney. See plaque at the top of Ferney Road.

The community of Mahon have indeed come a long way!
