Euro 2020 Predictions for June 22nd 2021

England versus Czech Republic

Group D.

Wembley Stadium, London. 8:00 pm.

England have flattered to deceive so far, doing just enough to reach the last sixteen of the European Championship. England looked steady if unspectacular against Croatia, but England were poor against an energetic and hard working Scotland and could have lost that match. England, one of the favourites have not looked convincing so far with a pedestrian midfield and an off colour Harry Kane in attack, but it is only the first round.

Czech Republic have been a surprise so far in the tournament with on form striker Patrick Schick in the running for the Golden Boot after scoring two very good goals against Scotland. His second probably being goal of the tournament, in a chip that was more like a golf shot then a soccer shot. Czech Republic lost 5-0 in Wembley in qualifying, but due to the year’s delay to the Covid 19 Pandemic, qualification form doesn’t really matter at this stage.

Verdict: England 1 Czech Republic 1. A draw would really suit both teams and put them through. I am now tipping Czech Republic (who I had at bottom at the start, see European Championship 2020 Group Predictions. to top Group D. England finishing second in Group D, while a poor first round performance would get England an easier draw then winning Group D (once again shows the flaws in the twenty four team tournament).

Scotland versus Croatia.

Hampden Park, Glasgow. 8:00 pm.

Scotland have been energetic and hard working teams so far this tournament, but have lack quality and finishing ability this European Championship with no goals so far in the competition. Scotland just don’t look to have a consistent goal scorer which is important in a tight match. Their forwards are also quite inexperienced at international level, with their capped forward (Lyndon Dykes) only having fourteen caps. It is hard to win games against good teams, when a team has no consistent scorer. Another factor counting against Scotland is the absence of Billy Gilmour, who was excellent against England due to Covid 19. It is hard to win the tight matches without in form players.

Croatia don’t have a team that were not as good as the runners up in the World Cup 2018, but are still capable of getting a result against Scotland today. There have been retirements from that team (Ratikitc, and Mandzukic) and Luka Modric is now 35 years old. Croatia did not look a threat on the English goal in their first, a switch at half time helped them against the Czech Republic, but the goal that Croatia scored was an individual goal from Ivan Perisic.

Verdict: Scotland 0 Croatia 0. Neither team looks to have a method of getting a goal.
