Limes Avenue on Ferney Road, Mahon.

Limes Avenue on Ferney Road is named after an ancient Lime Tree on the green, to the south of the houses on the avenue.  It may be about 150 years old and has become a familiar local landmark.

This tree would have been in the gardens of Ringmahon House and was probably planted originally by the Murphy family back in the 1800s.

Lime trees (Tilia Cordata) can live for hundreds of years, one in Gloucestershire in the UK is estimated to be 2,000 years old.  This species of tree is known in some countries as the Linden Tree, this tree on Limes Avenue is a very good example of the species.
